Status Quo

Volunteer fire departments in Landkreis Oder Spree (LOS) face new hurdles: Changing mission profiles, dwindling membership, and aging structures threaten their existence in rural areas.

This Service rethinks rescue operations by volunteer fire departments in rural areas. In addition, the attractiveness and the identity-forming factor of Volunteer Firefighters in rural areas move further into focus.

Service Blueprint

During an emergency call, first responders affiliated with their respective fire departments are alerted according to their distance to the incident. Standardized modularized vehicles within these fire departments support this cooperation among neighboring departments during an operation.

A Module for Every Occasion

Contrary to usual fire engines, which try to cover as wide a range of operations as possible, the modules solve dedicated tasks, such as technical assistance, firefighting or water transport, and can be coupled with regard to the mission requirements.

Exploratory Research

To understand requirements which rural areas place on services of general interest, we visited representative institutions in the county that provided these necessary goods and services. We visited palliative clinics, medium-sized enterprises, landfills, and a Demeter farm.
